Let’s repair an ATE MK100 ESP-unit!
Integrated yaw rate sensors, protocols for both DF11i and VDA wheel sensors, internal control for the electronic parking brake… The MK100 packs the newest technology. Hybrid vehicles have been included as well: the MK 100 ESC High Plus Hybrid is fully prepared for cars with regenerative braking. The system only needs the signal from the brake pedal position sensor to determine to what extent regeneration can slow down the vehicle and how much extra conventional braking force is needed. The MK 100 has the potential to become a very popular ABS system that we will find in many car models in the years to come. The list of equipped vehicles is steadily growing:
Reliability of the ATE MK 100 ESP
Yes, ATE, that is correct. In short, this range of ABS systems has changed hands quite a few times. This is why, in addition to the official brand name "Continental", you may also see the names "ATE" and "Teves". To come back to the issue: at this moment the reliability question is difficult to answer. The ABS system is still relatively new. So far no common problems have shown and no recalls have been issued. This is certainly positive, though we did receive a number of these ABS systems with problems.
Some problems seen with the Continental MK100
The number of faults we have seen is still fairly limited because of the age, but we do see a trend:
- One or more of the brakes remain locked
We have encountered other problems, but these are currently in very small numbers.
Remanufacture possibilities for the Continental MK 100
ACtronics has extensive experience in the repair and remanufacture of ABS systems. It is therefore not a problem to create a remanufacture solution for a new type of ABS unit. We are able to test the pressure sensors, signal processing wheel sensors, internal yaw angle sensor, pump motor and the valves in the HCU (blocked brakes are caused by stuck valves). A remanufacture solution is available
for a number of faults.
Note: Do not attempt to remove the ABS ECU from the HCU to access the valves! Continental uses press-fit coils in this system. Irreparable damage can be caused to the ABS system if the HCU is removed improperly. At ACtronics we have the right tools to split the unit.
Tips and tricks for the diagnostics
Last but not least, a few tips and trick for the MK100 that could be useful:
Tip 1: Recalls
Before starting diagnostics, repair or replacement, always check for recalls! This can save a lot of time, money and effort. In many cases, recalls are vehicle-specific: if water leakage causes a short circuit in car 1, this does not have to be the same for car 2. Always verify the make and model. If you are not affiliated with a dealer network, this international website is very useful: https://car-recalls.eu This website is updated weekly.
Tip 2: Excessive play in the wheel bearings
In case of wheel sensor complaints, check the wheel bearings for dirt, damage and excessive play. The signal that the magnetic or toothed ring must generate has little tolerance with modern, intelligent wheel sensors. A small deviation can cause a malfunction.
